Team update: What have LHCb been up to?

The Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment specializes in investigating the slight differences between matter and antimatter by studying a type of particle called the “beauty quark”, or “b quark”. Jonathan, from the LHCb team, has given us an update on what his team have been up to lately: “One of LHCb’s specialties is being able to make very precise measurements and so is in an excellent position to look for differences between these measurements and our predictions. Finding such signs of ‘New Physics’ would be fantastic as it would help us to build an ever better theory of the universe. “Just before Christmas, we unfortunately received some bad news. For some time, we had been getting quite excited about some measurements which seemed to disagree with our predictions (this could have been our time to shine!). In our model we would expect swapping out electrons for muons (their heavier … Continue reading

Catch up on the first live Chat

Yesterday, the first CERN Chat went live! It was a great chance for students to ask about common misconceptions with nuclear physics and all things CERN. Is radioactivity harmful at CERN? A common misconception is that radiation is always harmful and can have adverse effects on our health – but the STEM professionals at CERN tell us that this is not the case! Did you know? There is actually a higher radiation dose in a banana than most of their sources!🍌 👇Take a look at what was discussed in the Chat below👇 Who attended the Chat?
